Measuring Instruments Directive (MID)
What is the Measuring Instruments Directive?
The Measuring Instruments Directive (2004/22/EC) is a directive by the European Union, which seeks to harmonise the requirements of 10 different measuring instrument types, including gas and active electrical energy meters. In the UK this new directive has replaced OFGEM.
Where does MID apply?
The MID directive applies to all European products and creates one single market for measuring instruments. In the past, each European country had its own approval making it very difficult if a meter manufacturer wished to enter their product into a new country or market. All MID meters can be sold within the EU without the need to re-test to insure suitability for its given destination.
When was MID implemented?
MID came into force on the 30 October 2006 and there was a 10-year transition period.
How do I know if a meter is MID approved?
Measuring instruments that comply with the MID bear:
• the CE mark
• a capital letter "M" and the last two digits of the year of its affixing, surrounded by a rectangle
• the identification number of the notified body involved in conformity assessment
What does MID mean for me?
If you are planning to install a meter for billing purposes, it must be MID approved.
Can I still use a non MID approved meter?
As long as you are not using the readings gathered to bill a consumer, you are able to use a non-MID approved meter, (e.g. for monitoring applications).
